Summer 2025 Application Period

The Practical Nursing application period opens once a year in the month of June. We accept 20 students total that are split evenly between the day cohort and the evening cohort. The program is completed in 3 semesters starting in the Fall semester and ending at the end of the summer semester.

Points to note before you begin: 

  1. You will not be able to save and come back to your application. Be sure you have enough time to complete the entire application in one sitting. 

  2. It does not matter when you apply during the application period. Points are not awarded for being the first to apply, nor are you penalized for being the last to apply. 

  3. You will be filling out an Adobe application and uploading your documents straight into this application.

  4. If you miss or forget to upload any document required for this application, or you forget to VERIFY your email after hitting submit, then your application will be seen as incomplete. An incomplete application means you will not be considered for admittance to the program. 

    1. To verify your email on your application: First be sure you have clicked Submit at the end of your application. Then check your email and follow the directions by clicking the link to verify.

  5. Any material that has been forgotten cannot be sent after the application has been submitted.

Application Requirements and Steps

Complete a Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) Admission Application.  Applying to PPSC is free, and it takes about 10 minutes to complete the online application. 

If you are already enrolled at PPSC, you do not need to repeat this step.

Request that copies of your official transcripts be sent to: Records@pikespeak.edu OR submit official sealed transcripts directly to:

If you have already submitted your official transcripts to PPSC, you do not need to repeat this step.

Include UNOFFICIAL copies of transcripts from all previous colleges attended in your nursing application, including PPSC transcripts.

  • PN applications that do not include transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended will not be considered
  • Only highlight prerequisites on transcripts
  • Do not include you high school transcripts

  1. ENG 1021 English Composition 1 (3 credits)
  2. BIO 1006 Basic Anatomy & Physiology (4 credits) OR BIO 201/2101 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4 credits) OR BIO 2102 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4 credits)
  3. A minimum grade of C is required for the coursework listed above. If the coursework above is repeated, no more than one D or F in each course is allowed within the previous 7 years. All required science courses must be completed within 7 years of admission into the LPN program. We will only look at the first two attempts at science courses within those 7 years and will take the higher grade.
  4. Prerequisite coursework must be completed at the time of application.
  5. Any illegible, unofficial transcript submitted with the application will be seen as incomplete.

Please contact the Health Science Academic Advisors at hsadvising@pikespeak.edu for assistance with completing the PN prerequisites, as they all require college-level math and English readiness and/or general biology competency.

For the Practical Nursing Application, the following is required in order to apply:

Complete the Nursing Assistant (NUA) coursework within the Colorado Community College (CCCS) system.

These courses include:

  • NUA 101/1001 Certified Nurse Aid Health Care Skills

  • NUA 170/1070 Nurse Assistant Clinical Experience

  • NUA 171/1071 Advanced Nurse Aide Clinical

OR

Have an active Colorado Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate. If the CNA is obtained through a private company or through an out-of-state institution, the student must obtain an active CNA certificate. Please visit the Department of Regulatory Services to find information on transferring your out of state CNA license to Colorado. 

Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). TEAS information can be found at PPSC Testing Center        

The Individual Performance Profile provides the Reading Score, Math Score, and Science Score, which the Admissions Committee will score applicants on. Reading and Math must be at or above 70% to be awarded points and Science must be at or above 60% to be awarded points on the Application Score Sheet. Applicants may take the TEAS exam a maximum of 2 times in the 12 months prior to PN application submission. An example of the TEAS Individual Performance Profile is provided below. The student must submit their TEAS Individual Performance Profile score sheet with their application.

The PN application is an e-form that will be accessible via a link that will be available during the summer application period. All applications must be submitted through the application link; there are no in-person applications. Do not print out the materials to hand deliver as the Nursing Department will not accept in-person submissions.

Application review for content will not happen during submission of applications.

Application review will happen at a later date. The Nursing Department is not responsible for misplaced or failed submissions of application materials.

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the application is complete at the time of submission. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.

What Happens Next?

It is your responsibility to ensure that all steps of the application have been completed and all information has been submitted.

Applications will not be pre-screened during the application acceptance period. Students who submit incomplete applications will not be considered for admission to the Nursing Program for that application cycle.

Application Process Competitive Ranking

Provisional admission is based on a merit evaluation of GPA in the 2 prerequisite courses, your TEAS exam results, and qualified work experience. Applicants meeting all admission criteria will be ranked on a point system.

A maximum of 60 points will be awarded on the following criteria:

  1. GPA from the 2 required pre-requisite courses, a maximum of 20 points awarded
  • ENG 1021 English Composition I (3 credits)
  • BIO 1006 Basic Human Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits) OR
  • BIO 2101 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4 credits)

    PLEASE NOTE: For the purposes of the Nursing Program, students who have taken either (or both) of the BIO prerequisites more than one time will have the letter grades from their first two attempts at the course(s) in the current seven-year period ONLY averaged to receive the final letter grade/points awarded for the course. The Nursing Department will average BIO grades ONLY.
  1. Your TEAS Exam Results. Your TEAS scores will be awarded points based on the percentage you earn in each of the following categories:

90%-100% = 10pts

80%-100% = 10pts

80%-89% = 5 pts

80%-89% = 5 pts

70%-79% = 5 pts

70%-79% = 1 pt

  1. Qualified Work Experience. 10 points will be awarded for qualified work experience in the last 5 years. The employment verification form must be filled out completely and submitted with the application along with a job description.

  • Actively working or have worked in a medical-related field such as CNA, MA, PCA, PCT, EMT, QMAP, or phlebotomist. Points are awarded as follows:
    • 0-5 years = 5pts
    • 6+ years = 10 pts

Background Check Disqualifying Offenses

The Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education authorize the nursing programs to conduct a background investigation of all student applicants. The clinical sites used in the nursing programs require background checks of all potential interns. The purpose is to maintain a safe and productive educational and clinical environment. New students who refuse to comply with the background investigation will not be allowed to enter a CCCS Nursing Program.

An applicant will be disqualified from a CCCS nursing program based on the Disqualifying Offenses Guidelines.
